In light of the importance of mental health month, this blog post is dedicated to the importance of protecting the mind. Mental health by definition is “a state of emotional and psychological well-being in which an individual is able to use his or her cognitive and emotional capabilities, function in society, and meet the ordinary demands of everyday life.” The definition of mental health indicates that an individual is able to maintain cognitively in order to function responsibly.
However, as a result of the many responsibilities that many face personally and professionally, the importance of maintaining a healthy mind is pushed to the side, which leads to mental illness. Mental illness is defined as “health conditions that are characterized by alteration in thinking, mood or behavior associated with distress, and/or impaired functioning.”
Juggling the many roles of being a caregiver can lead to mental health illnesses such as depression, anxiety, mood disorders, and eating disorders. Often times, caregivers experience one or more of these mental illnesses as a result of stress and the inability to cope with requirements of providing care to a loved one and/or client. It is very important to take care of your mind as a caregiver because it is the key to your ability to function and safely provide care to your loved one or client. As a caregiver, it is important to pay attention to mental health indicators as follows:
Emotional well-being: the ability to be in a genuine space of happiness, peace and joy as you provide care to your loved one and or client.
Psychological well-being: the ability to fulfill your purpose in life, accept who you are as an individual, and functionally control environment personally and professionally.
Social well-being: the ability to socially accept and engage as a person personally and professionally.
